INSTRUCTIONS
The instructions are written for smaller size. If changes are necessary for larger size the instructions will be written thus ( ).
Ruffle
With 2 needles, cast on 72 (82) sts.
1st row: (WS). K1. (yfwd) twice. *K5. Slip 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over first st. (yfwd) twice. Rep from * to last 6 sts. K5. Slip 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th sts over first st. K1. 44 (50) sts.
2nd row: K2. *(KB1) twice. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
3rd row: Knit, dec 4 (2) sts evenly across. 40 (48) sts.
Leave sts on a spare needle.
Sock
With 2 needles, cast on 39 (47) sts loosely.
1st row: (RS). K1. *P1. K1. Rep from * to end of row.
2nd row: P1. *K1. P1. Rep from * to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows twice more, inc 1 st at center of last row. 40 (48) sts.
Joining row: Align needle with Ruffle and needle with ribbing, facing RS of Ruffle to RS of ribbing. *Knit 1 st from Ruffle needle and 1 st from ribbing needle tog. Rep from * to end of row. Divide into 13 (16) sts on 1st needle, 14 (16) sts on 2nd needle and 13 (16) sts on 3rd needle. Knit in rnds until work from beg measures 2 (2½) ins [5 (6) cm].
Arrange heel sts: Slip 3 (4) sts from end of 1st needle onto beg of 2nd needle, and 3 (4) sts from beg of 3rd needle onto end of 2nd needle. 10 (12) sts on first needle, 20 (24) sts on second needle, and 10 (12) sts on third needle. Divide the 20 (24) sts on 2nd needle onto 2 needles and leave for instep. Knit the 10 (12) sts off 1st needle onto end of 3rd needle. Working on these 20 (24) sts proceed as follows:
Make Heel:

2nd row: K1. Purl to last st. K1. Rep these 2 rows for 1¾ (2) ins [4.5 (5) cm], ending with 2nd row and dec 1 st in center of last row 19 (23) sts.

1st needle: With RS of work facing and using the heel needle, pick up and knit 9 (11) sts along side of heel.
2nd needle: K20 (24) instep sts. 3rd needle: Pick up and knit 9 (11) sts along other side of heel and K6 from
1st needle.
Sts are now divided as follows:
1st needle: 14 (18) sts
2nd needle: 20 (24) sts and
3rd needle: 15 (17) sts.
1st rnd:
1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
2nd needle: Knit.
3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of needle.
2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep these 2 rnds to 10 (13) sts on 1st needle, 20 (24) sts on 2nd needle and 11 (12) sts on 3rd needle. 41 (49) sts.
Knit even until work from pick up row at heel measures 4 (4¾) ins [10 (12) cm].
Next rnd:
1st needle: Knit.
2nd needle: Knit.
3rd needle: K2tog. Knit to end of row. 40 (48) sts.
Next rnd: Knit.
Size 6-8 yrs: Rearrange sts as follows: Slip 1 st from end of first needle to beg of second needle. Slip 1 st from end of second needle to beg of third needle. Now sts are divided as: 12 sts on first needle, 24 sts on second needle and 12 sts on third needle.

1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
2nd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.

Rep these 2 rnds to 16 (20) sts in rnd. Knit the sts of 1st needle onto end of 3rd needle. Break yarn, leaving an end 8 ins [20.5 cm] long.
Graft 2 sets of 8 (10) sts for toe. Sew back seam at top of sock and ruffle.
