SIMPLE STRIPE (CHRISTMAS) STOCKING

This pattern can be completed with the following Patons yarn:


Simple striped Christmas stocking to knit.

MEASUREMENTS
From top to heel = 12 ins [30.5 cm]
Foot length = 7 ins [18 cm].

MATERIALS
Patons Décor or
Patons Canadiana or
Patons Classic Merino Wool (100 g/3.5 oz)
Main Color (MC) 1 ball
Contrast A 1 ball

Set of four 4.5 mm (U.S. 7) double pointed needles or size needed to obtain tension.

TENSION: 20 sts and 26 rows = 4 ins [10 cm] in stocking st.

INSTRUCTIONS
With MC, cast on 44 sts loosely. Divide into 14 sts onto first 2 needles and 16 sts onto third needle. Join in rnd. Mark first st with contrast thread.
1st rnd: *K2. P2. Rep from * to end of rnd. Rep last rnd 3 times more. Knit in rnds until work from beg measures 2 ins [5 cm].
**With A, knit for 2 ins [5 cm]. With MC, knit for 2 ins [5 cm].** Work from ** to ** once more. With A, knit for 1 inch [2.5 cm].

Make heel: Slip last 11 sts from 3rd needle and first 11 sts from first needle onto one needle for heel having contrast marker in center. Leave 22 sts on 2 needles for instep. Break yarn.
With WS of work facing and MC, proceed across heel sts as follows:
1st row: (WS). Sl1. Purl to end of row.
2nd row: *Sl1. Knit to end of row.
Rep last 2 rows until heel measures 2 ins [5 cm].

Shape heel: 1st row: P14. P2tog. P1. Turn.
2nd row: Sl1. K7. Sl1. K1. psso. K1. Turn.
3rd row: Sl1. P8. P2tog. P1. Turn.
4th row: Sl1. K9. Sl1. K1. psso. K1. Turn.
5th row: Sl1. P10. P2tog. P1. Turn.
6th row: Sl1. K11. Sl1. K1. psso. K1. Turn.
7th row: Sl1. P12. P2tog. Turn.
8th row: Sl1. K 12. Sl1. K1. psso. 14 sts.

With RS of work facing and A, pick up and knit 12 sts along left side of heel. With 2nd needle K22 from instep. With 3rd needle pick up and knit 12 sts along right side of heel. K7 from heel onto end of 3rd needle. Slip rem 7 sts from heel onto beg of first needle. 60 sts are now divided 19 sts on first needle, 22 sts on 2nd needle and 19 sts on 3rd needle.

Knit in rnds as follows:
1st rnd: 1st needle: Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
2nd needle: Knit.
3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of rnd. 2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds to 44 sts divided as 11 sts on first needle, 22 sts on 2nd needle and 11 sts on 3rd needle. With MC, knit for 2 ins [5 cm]. With A, knit for 2 ins [5 cm].

Shape toe:
1st rnd: 1st needle: With MC, knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
2nd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to last 3 sts. K2tog. K1.
3rd needle: K1. Sl1. K1. psso. Knit to end of rnd. 2nd rnd: Knit.
Rep last 2 rnds until 20 sts rem. Knit sts from first needle onto 3rd needle.

Graft 2 sets of 10 sts tog for toe. Sew one pom-pon to each end of twisted cord. Attach twisted cord to stocking and make loop as illustrated.

Make pom-pons: Wind MC and A around 3 fingers approx 60 times. Remove from fingers and tie tightly in center. Cut through each side of loops. Trim to a smooth round shape.

Twisted Cord: Cut 4 strands of yarn (2-MC, 2-A) 54 ins [137 cm] long. With all strands tog hold one end and with someone holding other end, twist strands to the right until they begin to curl. Fold the 2 ends tog and tie in a knot so they will not unravel. The strands will now twist themselves together. Adjust length if desired.
